You Are Only You (2012)

“The only way to find true happiness is to risk being completely cut open”

– Chuck Palahniuk

You Are Only You was a multimedia project encompassing self-portrait photographs compiled into a three-dimensional exhibition space using latex, paint, glue, and paper.

It was a project concerned with the nature of female being.

As you overcome childhood you can come to realise ownership of the body has been removed by both its internal functions and compulsions, and external societal expectation. I use latex and plastic membranes both photographically and in installation to pull apart the body, examine the negativity accumulated inside it, dismantle the barrier between viewer and the viewed, and then show a final reclamation and cleansing of it from its abject status. It’s a simple rebirth sequence that is completed with the purifying paint destruction, and engages the viewer in their own personal space by questioning not only their own body values, but their own objectification of others.
